Label-reading guide

Read the label before you log

A practical walkthrough of UK nutrition labels: kcal and kJ, per 100g versus portions, and choosing the right food record for your diary.

Find the nutrition panel

Look for the table on the back or side of the packaging. Energy appears in kilojoules (kJ) and kilocalories (kcal). In a calorie diary, “calories” generally refers to kcal.

The panel also lists fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt. Fibre may appear too. Read the column heading before copying a value.

Compare like with like

The per-100g or per-100ml column gives a common basis for comparing products. The per-portion column describes the serving printed on the label, which may differ from yours.

For an illustrative 200g tub, a panel showing 90 kcal per 100g means the whole tub contains 180 kcal. Logging one tub as 100g would record only half the amount.

Check the preparation instructions

Some panels describe the product as sold; others include values after preparation. Check whether milk, oil, water or other additions are already included in the stated serving.

Before accepting a barcode result, compare the product name, flavour, pack and nutrition basis. A matching brand alone does not identify the exact food.

When the app and packet disagree

Use the current label for the product you have. Recipes and serving sizes can change, while catalogue entries may reflect an earlier pack. A missing nutrient value means it is unavailable, not necessarily zero.

Signed-in users with a verified email can submit shared catalogue corrections in Nutrition Buddy. Include the current label and serving basis so the difference can be checked.
